With more than 250 programs of study, 97,400+ students annually, and 52 testing centers to coordinate, Mississippi Virtual Community College has a lot to manage. And when it comes to proctored exams, there’s no room for error.
Read the case study below to learn how MSVCC partnered with SmarterProctoring to help serve each student’s unique proctoring needs, while offering equitable education and continuity between their testing centers, students, faculty, and staff members.
The Challenge
As a consortium made up of Mississippi’s 15 community colleges, the Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC) makes it possible for its institutional network to leverage each school’s distance learning resources to serve a diverse demographic of students across the state.
Through their services, MSVCC enables students to take remote courses from any of the 15 schools within the consortium — all while receiving student services (such as advisement, counseling, financial aid, and learning resources) provided by the local college the student is enrolled in.
In partnership with MSVCC, the Mississippi Community College Board’s (MCCB) Division of eLearning and Instructional Technology is responsible for coordinating with the 15 community colleges to provide online course offerings and professional development, along with shared faculty, courses, support services, and technology for their students.
With more than 250 programs of study, 97,400+ students annually, and 52 testing centers to coordinate, there’s a lot to manage. And when it comes to proctored exams, there’s no room for error.
Due to shared student resources, the consortium needed a way to serve each student’s unique proctoring needs, while offering equitable education. At the same time, the consortium needed to create continuity between each of their testing centers, students, faculty, and staff members, while ensuring they had a secure and credible system to manage and administer proctored exams.
The Solution
To create an environment where students, testing centers, and faculty members thrived, MSVCC adopted SmarterProctoring to act as its proctoring solution for each of the institutions within the consortium.
Throughout the adoption, MSVCC integrated with multiple SmarterProctoring modalities to create continuity, credibility, and equitable education across their institutions. The modalities adopted by the consortium included:
- Automated Proctoring: With Automated, students can test on-demand at any time. Powered by AI, an automated proctoring engine monitors the test taker and their electronic and physical environments. The assessment is deployed in the student’s browser that prohibits the student from opening unallowed applications and viewing other windows.
- Live Proctoring: With Live, a trained proctoring professional monitors the students’ virtual exams in realtime, while giving the institution the peace of mind needed to deliver a credible, easy-to-use exam experience. Students can schedule, pay, get refunds, test their equipment, and begin a live, virtual proctoring session from within the platform.
- Face-to-Face Proctoring: With Face-to-Face, SmarterProctoring is used by a faculty member to allow students to schedule their exams locally with an instructor. A faculty member can configure dates, times, and places that are available for testing
The Benefits
With the adoption of multiple proctoring modalities, MSVCC has been able to meet the needs of students no matter where they’re located. It has also allowed them to provide their students with ease-of-use when scheduling their proctored exam.
“With SmarterProctoring, if a student attends MS Gulf Coast Community College located at the at the most southern part of the state [and was traveling in the northern part of the state], they could take a test with Northwest Mississippi Community College,” explained Dr. Krista LeBrun, Assistant Executive Director for eLearning and Instructional Technology, Division of eLearning and Instructional Technology at MCCB.
“Students are not bound by location — they can test at any of the institutions, any of the proctoring locations with a variety of modalities.”
While accommodating each learners’ unique proctoring needs, SmarterProctoring was also able to create continuity for MSVCC’s instructors and testing center faculty members.
“Because of so many proctoring locations, SmarterProctoring was critical to have,” stated Dr. LeBrun.
“With 15 autonomous institutions, they may all have a little bit of variety with their rules and testing services, but continuity is [important] when you’re sharing students. Utilizing SmarterProctoring allowed us to have a secure platform for our proctoring centers, and allowed all materials to be in one, secure location.”
In addition to having all proctoring information inside of one secure system, SmarterProctoring also helped to create continuity by allowing MSVCC to create one consistent training on how to use the SmarterProctoring platform for all institutions.
Other benefits that MSVCC received when using SmarterProctoring included allowing their faculty to be more efficient in their day-to-day operations rather than having to manage multiple proctoring solutions and student exam schedules. Along with that, SmarterProctoring’s reporting capabilities provided them with information on their testing centers’ workload, enabling them to view capacity and adjust bandwidth based on which proctoring locations received the most students.
With SmarterProctoring, the MSVCC consortium is able to provide equitable proctoring options to their students, continuity between each institution and their testing centers, and a secure, credible system to manage and administer proctored exams in one place.
